A modest amateur springboard diving career prompted a two year stint of studies at Eastern Illinois University in 1975 & 76. A significant back injury forced him to refrain from diving competition. In 1977, Dave packed two small bags containing most of his belongings and headed south to Orlando Florida in a dilapidated Opel GT. There, he embarked on a true adventure and became an avid explorer of life.
In 1979 a small spark rekindled a raging fire on the professional high diving circuit when he discovered that his back injury had managed to somehow heal itself. Dave was always one to set his sights a little "high", but it was a combination of motivation and inspiration that led to a tremendously successful high diving career. Thank you Dan Poor and Pat Sucher!
As a rookie in March of 1981 he managed to achieve what most critics deemed impossible by wearing the crown of a World Champion! In 1982, he defended his title and silenced any critics with his second world championship title. And he didn't stop there. In that same year he helped to establish a new World Record for the highest dive (170 feet) at Sea World in Orlando Florida.
Millions have witnessed his amazing feats on ABC's Wide World of Sports. He has performed in countless shows at numerous Theme Parks and Fairs throughout the world. Dave's impact on the sport, both as a pioneer and mentor, will long be remembered.
As a performer, director and producer, his experience in the field of entertainment ranges from aquatic competitions and exhibitions to original music and stage show productions. His high diving talents have been flaunted at venues such as Sea World (FL, CA, TX & OH), Busch Gardens of Tampa, Six Flags and numerous others in Germany, Austria, Belgium, France, Jamaica, Japan and Australia. Dave is also an accomplished musician, singer and songwriter.
It wasn’t until May 14th, 2005 that he established the typical domestic roots when he married his wonderful wife, Gayle McCormick, a lifelong friend who lost her husband to a battle with cancer. It's no surprise that Gayle had an extensive career in diving as well. She coached the local Paddlers Diving Team for 27 years. Dave & Gayle now reside in a beautiful home in Granite City, IL.
Dave’s vivid and rather spirited imagination is now focused on and reflected in tantalizing full-length novels. His unique 'visionistic' concepts and the masterful art of conveying those extraordinary visions have culminated into a creatively intriguing literary talent.
